GOBABIS – When Johanna Nakale, 52, walked away from selling alcohol nearly a decade ago, she never imagined her decision would change the lives of dozens of vulnerable children in Gobabis.

Today, the former businesswoman has become a mother figure to 16 children, many of whom were abandoned, neglected, or living in difficult circumstances.

Nakale’s journey began in 2016 when a simple act of kindness changed the course of her life forever.

While operating her small business near a water point in Gobabis, she often saw San women and their children coming to collect water. Many of the children arrived hungry and crying.

“I was selling kapana and fat cakes under a tree. Every day I saw the mothers and children coming for water. The children were crying because they were hungry. I would give them fat cakes and food,” Nakale recalled.

As she continued helping them, Nakale realised many of the children needed more than a meal. Some lacked proper care, while others came from homes struggling with poverty and hardship.

Instead of looking the other way, she acted, boldly.

“I told myself I could not continue seeing these children suffering. I decided to open my doors and take care of them,” she said.

Today, 16 vulnerable children live under her care. They attend school, return home to a warm meal and have a safe place to sleep.
