He captained the school team between 1975 and 76.
“Those early years were defined by fierce rivalries between Luckhoff, Noorder Paarl, and Paulus Joubert High Schools. Sadly, I sustained a career-threatening dislocated shoulder injury… To my horror, the operation was performed by a rookie surgeon. The op left a permanent, massive scar on my shoulder. I was ashamed to wear short-sleeved shirts,” recalled Smith.
Despite the setback, the polished flanker made a quicker-than-expected return to the field with Young Villagers Under-19 X1 in the small town of Pniel, winning numerous silverware in high-profile cup tournaments across the city and suburban areas.
