The ninth leg of the 2026 Bank Windhoek Grand Prix Series delivered a landmark moment for Namibian chess, as the Oshana Open attracted a record 89 players to Oshana Gymnasium at Ongwediva on Saturday.

The turnout makes the Oshana Open the largest Bank Windhoek Grand Prix event to date, surpassing previous participation figures recorded at Swakopmund, Keetmanshoop and Walvis Bay.
It reflects the growing appeal of chess across the country, particularly in northern Namibia, where the sport continues to gain momentum among young players.
