THE City of Windhoek has acknowledged growing concerns over traffic congestion in the capital, saying the issue highlights the need for a broader mobility strategy that combines improved roads, reliable public transport and sustainable transport solutions.

In a statement issued by the City of Windhoek, Office of the Chief Executive Officer, Corporate Communications, Marketing, and Public Participation, the City said increasing congestion and longer travel times were real challenges facing residents, but warned that congestion was only a symptom of a wider challenge of providing safe, affordable and efficient urban mobility for a growing population.
The municipality said Windhoek, like many developing cities, had become increasingly dependent on private vehicles, adding that international experience showed that expanding roads alone could not provide a long-term solution to congestion.
“No major city in the world has ever successfully built its way out of congestion simply by expanding roads or upgrading intersections,” the City said.
