Joe-chintha Garises REHOBOTH – Senior traditional councillor of the !Ainîdaman Traditional Community, Gaob Kawango says many members of the ǂNūkhoen (Damara) community feel that their historical suffering during the colonial era has been overlooked and insufficiently recognised within Namibia’s genocide discourse and commemorative narratives. Kawango, also known by his indigenous and artistic names !Gawax’mâ !Khâxa Kharu ǀNaniseb and ǀOroǀōb, made the remarks during an interview with Nampa this week. The historian, linguist, praise singer, poet and cultural activist said descendants of affected ǂNūkhoen families continue to experience feelings of grief, invisibility and historical exclusion due to the limited acknowledgement of their suffering in public memory and official narratives.
