Staff Reporter TRAWLING for wet-landed horse mackerel will be permitted in slightly shallower waters for a limited period from May this year to April next year. “Cabinet authorised the temporary relaxation of trawling within the 200-metre isobath to a specified zone of 150 metres (and not shallower) for wet-landed horse mackerel fishing vessels for a period of 12 months,” the Minister of Information and Communication Technology, Emma Theofelus, announced. She made this announcement during a recent Cabinet briefing, where she revealed that the measure will be in effect from 1 May 2026 to 30 April 2027. She further announced that Cabinet has also directed the Ministry of Fisheries to designate a specific area for the exclusive use of the wet-landed horse mackerel subsector. “Cabinet approved that the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries, Water and Land Reform designate the area south of latitude 22° S, outside the 200-metre isobath, for exclusive use by the wet-landed horse mackerel subsector,” the minister said.
