Kahungu urges Khomas to help ease Windhoek’s service delivery burden

Senior City of Windhoek councillor Fransina Kahungu has called on the Khomas Regional Council to play a bigger role in addressing the capital’s growing service delivery challenges.

She said the regional authority should use part of the 5% rates contribution it receives from the municipality to create jobs and improve basic services. Speaking to New Era on Tuesday, Kahungu said Windhoek continues to struggle with unemployment, poor waste management, sanitation problems and the rapid growth of informal settlements, despite the City transferring millions of dollars every year to the Khomas Regional Council as required by law. She said stronger collaboration between the City, the Regional Council and central government would improve the lives of residents.

“The strategy which comes first is that we must agree on activities aimed at improving the lives of our residents,” Kahungu said.

She proposed that the Regional Council should use part of the money it receives from the City to employ young people in every constituency to clean neighbourhoods and manage waste.
