THE Democratic Republic of the Congo’s health system is under mounting pressure amid a growing Ebola outbreak, with the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC Africa) pleading for the urgent construction of dedicated treatment centres to contain the virus and ease the strain on existing hospitals.

Health authorities have reported about 1,200 confirmed Ebola cases so far, with 305 deaths. That gives the outbreak a case fatality rate of more than 25%.
