Bank of Namibia governor Ebson Uanguta has warned Namibia’s public debt has reached about 65% of gross domestic product (GDP), putting pressure on government to control spending and support economic growth.
Uanguta said the country can still service its debt at the current level but warned that this could change if debt continues to grow faster than the economy.

“We know that the debt level of the state is around 65% of GDP. Now, at that level, the country can afford to service that debt. What we need to make sure is for the debt level not to grow faster than the economy,” he said.
According to the Namibia Statistics Agency (NSA), the economy grew by 1.7% in 2025, down from 3.8% in 2024.
The latest NSA figures show that the economy grew by 2.0% in real terms in the first quarter of 2026, slower than the 2.8% recorded in the same quarter of 2025. The agency estimated nominal GDP at N$70.9 billion in the first quarter.
