With a little over a year before Swapo’s elective congress, an event that normally separates contenders from pretenders, where careers are made or reduced to ashes, veteran party leaders have called on the ruling party to strictly uphold its constitution.
They also called for the restoration of internal discipline and refocus on addressing the concerns of ordinary Namibians.
They warned that failure to do so could further erode public confidence. Swapo veteran politician and former Cabinet minister Jerry ‘Maudjuu’ Ekandjo said the party must use its recent electoral performance as a wake-up call.
He noted that Swapo lost its two-thirds majority in the National Assembly and now holds 51 seats, while opposition parties collectively occupy 45 seats. He added that several local authorities are now governed through shared representation with opposition parties. According to Ekandjo, these developments demonstrate that the party must “pull up its socks” if it is to preserve its legacy.
Vacancy
Ekandjo pointed to the prolonged vacancy in the office of the party’s vice president, saying the position has remained unfilled for years despite constitutional provisions requiring it to be occupied.
