Today, another mineral is attracting investors from around the world, triggering exploration licences, multimillion-dollar acquisitions and renewed optimism across the mining sector.

Its name is lithium.
Often called “white gold”, lithium has become one of the world’s most sought-after minerals, not because of its rarity, but because it sits at the heart of the global transition to clean energy.
Every electric vehicle, smartphone, laptop, tablet and large-scale battery storage system depends on lithium. Without it, the green energy revolution would simply stall.
For Namibia, the question is no longer whether lithium matters. It is whether the country can transform a lithium rush into lasting economic prosperity.
A tiny metal with enormous importance
Lithium is the lightest metal on the periodic table. Soft enough to be cut with a knife and highly reactive, it was first discovered in 1817 by Swedish chemist Johan August Arfwedson.
Despite its abundance in the Earth’s crust, lithium rarely occurs in pure form. It is typically extracted from hard-rock minerals such as spodumene or from underground brine deposits.
What makes lithium extraordinary is its ability to store energy.
