Ongwediva bars face crackdown over noise, permits

ONGWEDIVA – Bar operators and property owners in Ongwediva have been warned that failure to comply with noise pollution regulations, zoning requirements and municipal fitness certificates could result in enforcement action, including the impoundment of sound equipment.

The warning was issued during a stakeholder engagement held at the Ongwediva Multipurpose Centre on Tuesday, aimed at sensitising bar operators and property owners on noise pollution regulations and requirements for lawful bar operations.

Ongwediva Town Council Chief Fire Officer and Noise Pollution Committee member Sam Mathews said the council had to balance economic activity with residents’ right to a peaceful and safe living environment.

“Uncontrolled noise can disturb peace, affect health and undermine the enjoyment of property. Bars and entertainment venues are important local businesses, but residents also have a right to a peaceful and safe living environment,” Mathews said.
