After years of serving behind the scenes to strengthen public accountability, Liezel Van Schalkwyk has made history as Namibia’s first female Deputy Auditor-General, breaking a glass ceiling in one of the country’s most important oversight institutions.
Her appointment comes at a critical time as the Office of the Auditor-General prepares to strengthen its oversight of increasingly complex public finances including emerging sectors such as oil and gas. In an exclusive interview with New Era’s Acting Deputy Editor: Kundana, Lahja Nashuuta (LN) Liezel Van Schalkwyk (VS) said her priority is to build a stronger, more independent and future-ready institution capable of delivering audits that improve governance, public service delivery and the lives of ordinary Namibians.
She also outlines plans to champion the Public Audit Bill, invest in staff development, embrace technology and data analytics and ensure public resources are managed transparently and in the best interests of every citizen.
