South Africa will next month take over the leadership of the Southern African Development Community (SADC) from Madagascar, as President Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah returns to the regional summit to advance Namibia’s push for industrialisation, value addition to critical minerals and stronger regional infrastructure.
The 46th Ordinary SADC Summit, to be held in Durban on 17 August, comes a year after Madagascar assumed the chairmanship in Antananarivo, where Nandi-Ndaitwah made her maiden address to fellow Heads of State and Government and urged Southern Africa to move beyond exporting raw materials towards building industries that create jobs and economic growth.
During Madagascar’s tenure, SADC adopted industrialisation, agricultural transformation and energy transition as regional priorities. South Africa now inherits that agenda under a new theme that continues to emphasise infrastructure development, agriculture and critical minerals, signalling continuity rather than a shift in direction.
The 46th Ordinary Summit of the Southern African Development Community (SADC), to be hosted by South Africa, will review progress made under Madagascar’s chairmanship and chart the bloc’s economic priorities for the coming year.
