Namibia Air has taken another step towards becoming the country’s national airline after it received approval to operate scheduled and unscheduled air services.
The transport commissioner of Namibia, Joshua Kaumbi, yesterday granted the airline the licences needed to operate, with the government targeting the first week of December for the start of flights.
The licences are valid for five years from 6 August 2026, paving the way for the national carrier to acquire aircraft and begin operations.
The airline, however, still needs to obtain an Air Operator Certificate (AOC) from the Namibia Civil Aviation Authority before it may commence commercial operations.
Namibia Air is set to replace the country’s previous national airline, Air Namibia, which ceased operations and went into voluntary liquidation in 2021 due to severe, long-standing financial losses and unsustainable debt that many industry experts attributed to continuous mismanagement.
After costing the country billions of dollars in financial rescues, government stopped financial bailouts of Air Namibia, which eventually led to the permanent closure of the previous flag carrier.
