Close to 540 security guards from the Namibia Protection Services (NPS) face retrenchment at the end of this month after the City of Windhoek opted not to renew the procurement of security services from the NPS.
NPS CEO Fanie Horn wrote several times to City CEO Moses Matyayi, warning of possible retrenchments and urging the City to consider renewing the contract, but his appeals were unsuccessful.
NPS, which is one of the largest Namibian-owned security companies offering nationwide protection services across 14 distinct branches, operates as a fully independent subsidiary under Kalahari Holdings, which is the commercial investment arm of the ruling Swapo Party.
With the fate of about 540 security guards currently in limbo, the city on Wednesday once again reaffirmed its position not to renew the contract with NPS, saying the agreement was of a temporary nature and has run its full course.
