Namibia’s agricultural sector has made history by successfully harvesting its first-ever locally grown bananas, which can now be purchased in various volumes at Checkers Maerua Mall and at other leading outlets in Windhoek.
The country’s first ever home-grown bananas were harvested at the Etunda banana trial project in the Omusati region and will go a long way in achieving local self-sufficiency and reducing the country’s more than 7 000 tonnes of annual banana imports.

Spearheaded by the Namibian Agronomic Board (NAB) and the country’s leading agricultural solutions company, AvaGro, the Etunda project yielded a total of 2.5 tonnes of bananas to mark a historic commercial breakthrough for domestic production, following their planting in January 2025.
Bananas remain the second most highly consumed fruit in Namibia after apples, with the country currently importing bananas worth around N$70 million annually from neighbouring South Africa and other countries.
