Foreign interference, the flow of weapons and the activities of mercenaries are among the main factors prolonging Sudan’s devastating conflict, a Pan-African Parliament (PAP) committee has heard.
The findings are contained in a report tabled before the First Ordinary Session of the Seventh Pan-African Parliament by Namibia’s Head of Delegation and Chairperson of the Committee on Cooperation, International Relations and Conflict Resolution, Hon. Phillipus Katamelo, following a joint hearing on the security crisis in Sudan and its humanitarian consequences.
The report is based on evidence presented by Sudan’s Ambassador to South Africa, Ousmane Abou Fatima Adam Mohamed, representatives of the African Commission on Human and Peoples’ Rights (ACHPR), peace and security experts and civil society organisations, who all warned that continued external involvement is undermining efforts to end the conflict.
According to the report, the committee concluded that neighbouring countries and the wider international community have an important role to play in preventing the conflict from escalating further.
