Matyayi wins bronze on Day 2 of African Champs
Namibia’s swimmers continued to impress on Day 2 of the 17th African Swimming Championships in Oran, Algeria, securing a bronze medal and multiple top-8 finishes across individual and relay events. Girls’ 50m butterfly (14–18 years): Roselinda Matyayi won bronze with a time of 28.95, delivering Namibia’s first medal of Day 2. Boys’ 50m butterfly (14–18 years): Luke Beukes placed fifth (24.91) with a new age group and open long course Namibian record, while Nathan Bock finished eighth (25.71), keeping Namibia strongly represented in sprint butterfly. Boys’ 200m backstroke (14–18 years): Lorenzo Esterhuizen finished fourth (2:09.43), narrowly missing the podium. Men’s 100m breaststroke (19+ years): Jose Canjulo placed fourth (1:04.03), Namibia’s best senior result of the day. Girls’ 200m freestyle (14–18 years): Victoria De Sousa finished sixth (2:12.36). Women’s 100m breaststroke (19+ years): Molina Smalley placed seventh (1:17.56). Girls’ 200m backstroke (14–18 years): Roselinda Matyayi finished seventh (2:32.16), her second final of the day. Mixed 4x100m medley relay (19+ years): Namibia finished sixth with a time of 4:18.52. Team: Jose Canjulo, Luke Beukes, Molina Smalley, Trisha Mutumbulua. Day 2 brought Namibia a bronze medal, seven individual finalists, and a competitive relay finish. With strong performances across age groups and strokes, Namibia continues to build momentum at the African Championships. The federation looks forward to further achievements in the days ahead.
