Govt commits to quench coastal thirst

SWAKOPMUND – The government has reaffirmed its commitment to ensure affordable and reliable water for coastal communities through continued investment in bulk water infrastructure.

This is according to the deputy water minister Ruthy Masake.

Masake was speaking at the groundbreaking ceremony of the N$83.9 million Schwarzekuppe–Swakopmund Pipeline Replacement Project outside Swakopmund recently.

The Schwarzekuppe–Swakopmund project will replace the final nine kilometres of the ageing Kuiseb Collector II–Schwarzekuppe–Swakopmund pipeline, completing the rehabilitation of the entire 80-kilometre (km) system. Once completed, it will improve the reliability of water to the coastal communities.

Masake said protecting the Kuiseb aquifer remains key to keeping water costs down for households and businesses while improving water security in the Erongo region.
