South Africa’s feedlot industry is driving Namibia’s cattle export growth, with more than 90% of live cattle exported in June 2026 crossing the border to meet demand from South African feedlots.
According to the Livestock and Livestock Products Board (LLPB) of Namibia, South Africa purchased 6,814 cattle during the month, accounting for 90.7% of Namibia’s total live cattle exports.
The cattle were exported as feeder animals, meaning they will be further raised in South Africa’s feedlot system before being slaughtered and processed.
The strong demand from South Africa helped push Namibia’s overall cattle marketing higher, with total cattle marketed increasing by 8.5% year-on-year, from 20,985 cattle in June 2025 to 22,773 cattle in June 2026. Month-on-month, cattle marketing increased by 21.6% from 18,732 cattle recorded in May 2026.
The LLPB said the increase was largely driven by the rise in live cattle exports.
