Labour ministry races to upgrade employment portal

Namibia’s high unemployment is placing unprecedented pressure on the government’s online recruitment platform, with the Ministry of Justice and Labour Relations confirming that the Namibia Integrated Employment Information System (NIEIS) is struggling to cope with an explosion in job seekers accessing the portal. This is particularly the case during periods when vacancies are advertised.

In a public notice issued last week, the ministry acknowledged that the employment portal is experiencing intermittent performance problems caused by exceptionally high volumes of simultaneous users.

The admission highlights the growing demand for employment opportunities with thousands of Namibians increasingly depending on digital recruitment platforms to secure work. NIEIS serves as the government’s central online employment portal, allowing job seekers to register profiles, search for vacancies and submit applications electronically. However, the ministry said the recent surge in traffic has overwhelmed the existing system infrastructure, resulting in slow response times, delayed page loading and periodic service interruptions. The technical challenges come at a time when competition for jobs in both the public and private sectors has intensified, with single vacancy advertisements often attracting hundreds or even thousands of applicants.
