Salary negotiations between the Tsumeb Municipality and the Namibia Local Authorities Union (NALAWU) have reached a fresh deadlock, with the union rejecting a 4% across-the-board salary increase and warning of possible retrenchments.
The union, which initially demanded a 10.5% increase for employees in bargaining-unit bands A to C, has since lowered its demand to 7.5%.
NALAWU secretary-general Chris Katjitundu said the municipality’s 4% offer was inadequate given the rising cost of living and should not be extended to management and councillors who fall outside the union’s bargaining mandate.
