Namibia’s bowlers, boxers and swimmers all made a great start to the Commonwealth Games which got underway in Glasgow, Scotland, on Thursday.
By yesterday afternoon some of Namibia’s bowlers and boxers were still in the running to win medals, while some swimmers had reached the semi-finals and broken national records.
In bowls, Namibia’s women’s pairs team of Diana Viljoen and Amanda Steenkamp made a great comeback after losing their opening match 2-0 (6-3, 4-3) to England’s pair of Amy Pharaoh and Sian Honnor on Thursday.

The next day, they bounced back with a tie-break victory against Rebeccah Rixon and Connie-Leigh Rixon of Malta (4-3, 0-8, 1-0), and then pulled off another tie-break win against Thabelo Muvhango and Jacqui Janse van Rensburg of South Africa (7-4, 4-6, 1-0).
Yesterday they recorded another tie-break win against one of the tournament favourites, India (7-5, 1-10, 3-0), while they beat Tonga 2-0 (4-3, 4-2).
That put Namibia on 12 points at the top of the log with England in Section B but they narrowly missed out on the semifinals after England won the group with a better set differential.
Viljoen and Steenkamp were both elated with their win against South Africa.
