Namibia appoints deputy DG to lead global chemical weapons ban effort

The ministry of international relations and trade has announced the appointment of ambassador Mekondjo Kaapanda-Girnus as deputy director-general of the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW), marking a new era of leadership for one of the world’s most respected multilateral institutions.

Officially assuming office on 25 July 2026, Kaapanda-Girnus becomes the second most senior official of the OPCW.

Her appointment in this eminent position is regarded as a distinct honour for Namibia and a strong affirmation of the international community’s confidence in the country’s expertise, integrity, and steadfast commitment to the advancement of global peace and disarmament.
