KK United secures NPL spot

KK United FC clinched promotion to the Namibia Premier Football League (NPFL) with a commanding 4-0 victory over Unam Rundu Campus FC at the Rundu Sports Stadium on Saturday. In a historic first, the team became the first from Kavango West to qualify for Namibia’s top flight, sealing its top-flight return with 41 points despite playing the season away from home. Head coach Petrus Matjayi said, “Our approach from the word go was to attack with numbers relentlessly, especially within the first 15–20 minutes of the first stanza, keeping the opposition in their half most of the time through aggressive pressing. Tactically, we deployed effective wing play by utilising the speed and trickery of our wingers and the lone striker with the support of the two attacking midfielders. Fortunately for us, the plan worked, and we scored two goals within the first 25 minutes of the game.” He noted that wing play is an effective tactic deployed primarily by teams such as Chula Chula and Mighty Gunners, which usually works perfectly for them. Reflecting on the season without a home venue, Matjayi emphasised: “It was a daunting task and mental challenge, given the massive support and encouragement we received from various people. We were home away from home.” Looking ahead, the coach urged patience, saying that the NPL is a whole different level. It’s more tactical and structured, and the technical team will have to meet first, consult, discuss and have a direction. Club president Frans Kalenga said, “This achievement means everything to Kavango West,” noting that infrastructure development, improved sports facilities, increased business activity, tourism and youth empowerment could follow, but warned that inadequate facilities risk shifting benefits elsewhere. “We cannot do this alone; it is about empowering the region,” he said, adding that the team would approach the new chapter with open minds, open hearts and a collective spirit. Team manager Herman Kambanzera expressed excitement and pride at winning the league, saying, “With God, everything is possible. We made history.” With a resounding 4-0 win and a regional first, KK United now turn to preparing on and off the pitch for the demands of the NPFL.
