Namibia and Germany discuss ethics of museum artefacts

ATOP the towering hills of Windhoek, Namibian artist Tuli Mekondjo beckons viewers into a transient performance, as the sounds of typewriters, steam train engines thundering through the hinterlands, and the ghostly winds of the Namib Desert come to life on a projector.

The dance performance, accompanied by archival photos and recordings, narrates tales of the evacuation of thousands of Namibians to concentration camps such as Shark Island, where the harsh elements of nature would eventually terminate their lives.
