The air corridor between Cape Town and Johannesburg has cemented its position as Africa’s busiest airport pairing, handling an impressive 3.4 million passengers during 2025, according to the latest World Air Transport Statistics (WATS) released by the International Air Transport Association (IATA). The milestone underlines the growing importance of Southern Africa’s largest aviation market and highlights the critical role that efficient air connectivity continues to play in supporting business, tourism and economic integration across the region.
The annual WATS report, which compiles operational data from more than 1,300 airlines worldwide, identifies the route linking Cape Town International Airport and Johannesburg’s OR Tambo International Airport as the continent’s busiest airport pair, comfortably ahead of every other African domestic or international route.
