SHENZHEN – President Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah has thrown full support behind a Huawei-backed smart city pilot project for Windhoek and Swakopmund, saying the initiative must deliver real economic benefits, create jobs and improve public services if it is to succeed.
The President made the remarks yesterday during a visit to Huawei’s Research and Development, Manufacturing Hub and Smart City Exhibition Centre in Shenzhen, China, where she also welcomed the company’s plans to deepen its partnership with Namibia through digital infrastructure, artificial intelligence (AI) and skills development.

Speaking during the visit, Nandi-Ndaitwah said Namibia views digital transformation as a key driver of economic growth, industrialisation, good governance and sustainable development, but stressed that technology should improve people’s lives rather than worsen unemployment.
“Namibia recognises that digital transformation is no longer just about technology. It is a strategic imperative for economic growth, industrialisation, good governance and sustainable development,” she said.
The President said she was encouraged that Huawei has already trained more than 2 000 people through its digital skills programmes, adding that Namibia needs more young people equipped with ICT and AI skills to participate in the emerging digital economy. “As we embrace technology, we need digital skills because they will help us appreciate what a digital economy can do for countries. Our government is committed to building an inclusive, knowledge-based economy driven by innovation, digitalisation and human capital development,” she said.
