Tales of the Legends – Meet John Mutorwa, the bookish lawmaker-cum-bone-butcher

Namibia has produced a significant number of multitalented lawmakers and anti-apartheid activists, including departed Commander-in-Chief Dr. Hage Geingob, Nico Bessinger, Dr Ben Amathila, Jerry Ekandjo, Engelhard Gariseb, Bobby Sissing, Bernard Esau, Daniel Tjingarero and a few others in that sequence.

Though Geingob was the most vocal about his well-navigated football journey, his peers were equal to the task. Long-serving Parliamentarian John Mutorwa enjoyed a successful football career with one of the most prominent sporting entities in the business, Cuca Tops Football Club, as a solid defender-cum-player-coach in an illustrious playing career.

Back in the day, wide awake streetwise anti-apartheid activists used football as a vital tool to challenge racial oppression. Political discussions to topple the apartheid government were cleverly masqueraded as club meetings.

The strongly built defender was a one club man who played his entire career for Cuca Tops Football Club. He regularly featured for the Far North Invitational Eleven, touring other towns in the Maize Triangle and as far afield as Oranjemund.
