SANGWALI – Mayeyi Traditional Authority spokesperson Chief Boniface Shufu has called on the government to establish a border post at Kawedumu, about 70 kilometres from Maun, Botswana or Yasunu, about 20 kilometres from Gumare.
He said this would boost trade, tourism and access to essential services for communities in the Zambezi region.
Shufu made the appeal on Saturday while officially opening the 2026 Batshara Annual Cultural Festival at Sangwali, the traditional headquarters of the Mayeyi people.
Addressing community members, government leaders, traditional authorities and guests, he also called for inclusive development, improved public services and the preservation of Mayeyi culture and heritage.
“We propose the construction of a border post at Kawedumu or Yasunu to strengthen ties with Botswana and shorten travel distances for trade, health access and family visits,” Shufu said.
