The Embassy of France in Namibia, the Franco-Namibian Cultural Centre (FNCC) and the OYO Dance Troupe on Monday launched MOVEMENT, an international dance festival designed to support the growth and professionalisation of Namibia’s dance sector. The year-long initiative will take place in three seasons, from June to October, and will bring together choreographers and dancers from Namibia, France, South Africa, Botswana, and Réunion Island. Funded through the French Ministry of Europe and Foreign Affairs’ Fonds Équipe France (FEF), the project has received close to 70 000 euros (approximately N$1.3 million).

The festival seeks to contribute to the development of a sustainable dance industry in Namibia through training, artistic exchanges, performances and dialogue among dance professionals. French Ambassador to Namibia Cécile Vigneau said the project aligns with Namibia’s growing focus on cultural and creative industries. “Creative and cultural industries have been named a priority area by the President of the Republic of Namibia, Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah.
