Namibian fencer Varivo Ndjavera’s journey in fencing began almost by coincidence, but what started as an after-school activity has grown into a sport that has taken her beyond Namibia’s borders and shaped her into a more resilient and confident athlete.
Born and raised in Windhoek, Ndjavera attended Holy Cross Convent Primary School before moving to St Paul’s College. She had been doing ballet from the age of six, but as she entered high school, she became interested in exploring other sporting disciplines.
Her introduction to fencing was inspired by an unlikely source –a Disney Channel television show.
“There’s this show that used to air on Disney Channel that I’d watch occasionally. It was called ‘Elena of Avalor’,” Ndjavera said, recalling an episode in which the main character showcased her fencing skills.
