BEIJING – President Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah did not travel nearly 12 000 kilometres to the world’s second largest economy, China, to sign agreements or strengthen diplomatic ties alone.
Her mission was far bigger: to persuade one of the world’s largest economies to help Namibia stop exporting its wealth in raw form and start building factories, processing its own minerals, training its people and creating jobs at home.
By the time her seven-day state visit ended, that message had shaped almost every major engagement, from the manufacturing floors of Guangdong and the artificial intelligence laboratories of Shenzhen to the agricultural research centres of Sichuan and the Great Hall of the People in Beijing.
The visit culminated in the signing of nine cooperation instruments and the elevation of bilateral ties to a Namibia-China Community with a shared future for the new era – a relationship both governments say will focus on long-term development and strategic cooperation.
