SWAKOPMUND – The Ministry of Urban and Rural Development has allocated N$10 million towards the Food/Cash-for-Work Programme for the current financial year, to provide temporary income support to vulnerable households while creating community assets.
Deputy minister of urban and rural development Evelyn !Nawases-Taeyele made the announcement of the allocation during the opening of the three-day annual Rural Development Review and Planning in Swakopmund yesterday.
She said the initiative responds to the socio-economic challenges facing communities, based on Namibia’s current unemployment rate of 36.9%, with youth unemployment among people aged 15 to 34 standing at 44.1%.
!Nawases-Taeyele said although the programme is not a long-term solution to unemployment, it provides immediate relief to vulnerable households while contributing to community development.
