Oshana’s growth comes with challenges

The Oshana region recorded progress in economic growth, infrastructure development, job creation and social services during the 2025/2026 financial year, but unemployment, limited resources and project delays remain key challenges.

According to the Oshana Regional Council’s report tabled on Wednesday in the National Council by Oshana East constituency councillor Abner Shikongo, 120 permanent and 1 681 temporary jobs were created through infrastructure and development projects.

The region also attracted investment through agriculture, support for micro, small and medium enterprises and major trade fairs.

Agribank disbursed about N$2.8 million to 13 agricultural projects, while the Development Bank of Namibia approved N$11.32 million for projects in construction, electricity, manufacturing, health and other sectors.

Infrastructure remained a major focus, with about N$357.3 million allocated to projects during the year.

“Major investments included the N$712.7 million upgrade and extension of the Oshakati Water Purification Plant and the N$236.7 million Ogongo-Oshakati pipeline replacement project,” reads the report.

The report further indicates that the region made gains in education, producing 3 010 graduates from higher education and vocational institutions.

The Oshana region further improved its position at the National Athletics Championships, moving from 11th place in 2025 to fourth in 2026.

However, the report highlights persistent unemployment, limited financial resources, delays in project implementation and rising demand for quality public services.

The report says stronger coordination, accountability and efficient use of public resources will be crucial to sustaining development in the region.
