BOUAR – At least eight people were killed when an illegal gold mine collapsed in western Central African Republic, local sources told AFP on Wednesday.

The collapse in the Yongkoro mine near the Cameroon border overnight from Monday to Tuesday was the latest of many such disasters in the mineral-rich nation.

“People came illegally at around 2:00 am and began mining. There was a collapse, and I have been told there are eight dead,” local MP Moussa Laurent Ngon Baba told AFP.
