Namibia has strengthened its push for deeper African cooperation after Minister of International Relations and Trade Selma Ashipala-Musavyi joined fellow African foreign ministers at the 49th Ordinary Session of the African Union (AU) Executive Council, where she also signed a key agreement aimed at unlocking the continent’s mineral wealth for development.
The two-day meeting, which opened in Addis Ababa, brought together foreign affairs ministers from AU member states under the theme “Assuring Sustainable Water Availability and Safe Sanitation Systems to Achieve the Goals of Agenda 2063.”
On the sidelines of the meeting, Ashipala-Musavyi signed the Statute of the Africa Minerals Development Centre (AMDC), a continental institution established to coordinate the implementation of the Africa Mining Vision and ensure Africa’s mineral resources contribute to inclusive economic growth, industrialisation, and sustainable development.
The centre will be headquartered in Conakry, Guinea.
The signing places Namibia among African countries supporting a common continental approach to managing mineral resources at a time when global demand for critical minerals continues to rise.
Besides the signing ceremony, Ashipala-Musavyi held separate bilateral meetings with Ethiopia’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Gedion Timothewos, Kenya’s Prime Cabinet Secretary and Cabinet Secretary for Foreign and Diaspora Affairs Musalia Mudavadi, as well as Angola’s Minister of External Relations, Ambassador Téte António.
