Patients at Engela State Hospital are set to benefit from refurbished beds later this month as part of a community-driven project to improve conditions at the northern hospital.
The initiative, led by the Rob Youth Foundation Namibia, targets at least 70 beds in total, with an initial phase covering 15 beds expected to be completed by the end of September.
The project responds to a broader challenge facing healthcare facilities across the country, where basic infrastructure and equipment, not just medical services, often need investment to give patients a safe and dignified environment.

The Namibia Special Risks Insurance Association (NASRIA) has contributed N$30 000 toward the first phase, and Engela State Hospital management has worked closely with the foundation to make the initiative possible.
The organisation credits the hospital’s cooperation as instrumental to getting the project off the ground.
Regional manager for the Rob Youth Foundation Ottilie Johannes said the project ties into the organisation’s wider work in youth empowerment and community development.
“As a National Youth Foundation, we reaffirm our commitment to youth empowerment and community development as one of our objectives to contribute to the infrastructure development of our country. We are proud of the achievements so far,” Johannes said.
Beyond the physical repairs, the project is framed as an effort to improve the day-to-day experience of patients receiving care.
The foundation says it will continue working with hospital management and other stakeholders, as it works toward the full 70-bed target.
