Kayengona youth take clean-up campaign beyond village

What started as a small effort by two young people to keep a popular riverbank in Kayengona clean is now growing into a wider community campaign aimed at encouraging neighbouring villages to take responsibility for the environment along the Kavango River.

The founders of the initiative, Ronaldo Shikesho and Daniel Musumali, say they are now looking beyond Kayengona and want to take their clean-up campaign to communities including Mazana village, Ngone, Shambyu and Mutengo Mukuru.

The initiative, which began about four years ago, initially focused on a riverbank in Kayengona frequently used by residents for bathing, braais and other recreational activities.

It has since attracted about 30 young people who regularly participate in cleaning activities.

Shikesho said the group has now started its second-quarter clean-up programme, beginning at Uvhungu Vhungu and heading eastwards, with the intention of reaching more communities and encouraging residents to adopt similar initiatives.
