Staff Reporter THE number of male Angolan nationals arrested for rape in Namibia is increasing at an alarming rate. The alleged perpetrators are mostly young men employed as cattle herders or domestic workers, and the victims usually reside in the same house or are close neighbours. The latest incident occurred in Omutundungu village, Omusati Region, on Friday. It is alleged that a 22-year-old Angolan man asked a 14-year-old female neighbour to accompany him to his residence to fetch unidentified items for her mother. However, upon arrival at the suspect’s residence, his real intention became clear. He grabbed the victim, dragged her into his room and raped her. He has been arrested and is expected to appear in court on Monday. Reports of young Angolan men arrested for alleged rape have become increasingly common. Some point to the perpetrators’ cultural background as a possible explanation. The concept of rape as defined by Namibian law does not exist in some cultures.
