RIO DE JANEIRO – Rising diplomatic and trade tensions between Brazil and the United States have fuelled concerns among analysts and former diplomats that ideology and political alignment are increasingly displacing traditional state diplomacy. The latest trigger was Washington’s revocation of the visa of Brazilian Ambassador to the United States, Maria Luiza Ribeiro Viotti, last week, reportedly in response to the denial of visas to two American deliberate escalation of hostile measures against Brazil, driven by ideological motives,” the office of Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva said in a statement.

The dispute came amid already strained relations, marked by Brazil’s withholding of formal approval for Daniel Perez, nominated by US President Donald Trump in June without seeking Brazil’s prior approval, and by new US tariffs of 25% on Brazilian products.
