GOBABIS – In a region where many families depend on soup kitchens to survive, a neglected community garden on the outskirts of Gobabis is being transformed into a weapon against hunger.
It plans to supply fresh vegetables, eggs and other nutritious food to 20 feeding centres before the end of the year.
The project, funded by the Capricorn Foundation and implemented by Genesis Namibia, is bringing together local farmers, unemployed women and community volunteers in a drive to improve food security and restore dignity to vulnerable households in the Omaheke region.

Select Agri recently travelled to Omaheke region to cover various stories.
Located about 10 kilometres outside Gobabis, the two-hectare garden is already producing cabbage and beetroot.
Preparations are underway to expand production to carrots, spinach and broccoli.
For Genesis Namibia director Riaan van Zyl, the project represents more than agriculture.
It is part of a long-term effort to reduce hunger by creating a sustainable source of nutritious food for communities that rely on soup kitchens.
