Namibia lacks dedicated waste management law

SWAKOPMUND – Namibia’s waste management efforts remain hampered by the absence of dedicated waste management regulations, with responsibilities spread across more than 450 pieces of legislation administered by different institutions.

This was said by Ministry of Environment, Forestry and Tourism Deputy Environmental Commissioner Caroline !Garus-Oas during a stakeholder consultation on the proposed Waste Management Regulations under the Environmental Management Act of 2007 in Swakopmund on Monday.

!Garus-Oas said although the Act contains provisions relating to waste management, it does not provide sufficient detail on what should be monitored, regulated and enforced.
