NUST Warriors build for a strong finish

The Namibia University of Science and Technology (Nust) Netball team, Nust Warriors, is looking to finish the Khomas Netball League season strongly as its first, second and third division sides continue their respective battles on the domestic circuit.

The Nust Warriors have established themselves as a competitive force, with the three teams pursuing different goals as the league season approaches its conclusion.

The first division team competing in the Super 10 is fighting for a place in the MTC Namibia Netball Premier League play-offs, while the second-division team is chasing promotion to the first division and the division title. The third-division side is likewise targeting promotion to the second division and the division title.

According to captain of the third division team, Menarandjambi Tjaverua, the Warriors are more than a collection of student-athletes.

“The Nust Warriors netball team is far more than just a group of student-athletes playing a sport; we are a diverse, highly disciplined family,” Tjaverua said.

She said the team’s identity is built around unity, resilience and the demanding balance between academics, work and competitive sport.

The Warriors’ ambitions extend beyond the Khomas League. Earlier this year, the team made history by finishing second at the Southern African Universities Staff Sports Association (SAUSSA) Games in South Africa, reaching the semi-finals and final for the first time.

The international experience has strengthened the team’s confidence while exposing its players to higher levels of competition.

However, financial limitations remain a major obstacle, with the team seeking sponsors and partners to assist with equipment, playing attire and participation in international competitions.

Tjaverua said such support would allow more student-athletes to gain valuable exposure beyond Namibia.

The team’s development is also a major focus for head coach Jane Toivo, who has been involved with Nust Netball since her student days.

“My plan is to grow and nurture them mentally and physically for them to be disciplined on and off court,” Toivo said.

She said her goal is to develop players who can progress to the national team while ensuring they are prepared for the demands of elite netball.

“I am always happy to see some of the players I coached in the past years playing in the national team, and that is always what I want as a coach: to produce players fit for the national team,” she said.

Toivo has already seen several former NUST players progress to the national team and Premier League clubs, including Elisia Hambongo and Loide Hanyanya.

The Warriors are also proud of their development structure, which gives beginners an opportunity to enter the sport and progress through the ranks. Their defensive approach has previously earned them the Best Defensive Team accolade in the 2025 Khomas League season.
