The National Youth Service (NYS) has revised the admission requirements for its 17th intake of the Voluntary National Service Training Programme.
This comes after public concerns that the original criteria would exclude many unemployed and disadvantaged young Namibians.
The revised recruitment notice, issued this week, lowers the academic requirements for applicants and broadens access to young people who wish to pursue Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) after completing the six-month National Service Training programme.
The changes come just days after Member of Parliament Willem Amutenya wrote to Minister of Education, Innovation, Youth, Sport, Arts and Culture Sanet Steenkamp, urging the ministry to review the original recruitment requirements.
He argued that the initial criteria were inconsistent with the purpose of the National Youth Service, which was established to uplift disadvantaged youth through skills development, discipline, and national service.
