Namibia’s tourism attractions are set to receive international exposure when three Mercedes-Benz S-Class vehicles travel through the country from 22 to 27 August as part of the automaker’s global “140 Years. 140 Places” anniversary campaign.

The initiative, which marks 140 years since Carl Benz invented the automobile, will see the three vehicles travel more than 50 000 kilometres across six continents, visiting 140 selected destinations and highlighting stories of people, places, mobility and progress.

Namibia has been selected as one of the African destinations on the global campaign, with the Namibia Tourism Board (NTB), Namibia Investment Promotion and Development Board (NIPDB) and M&Z Motors Namibia collaborating to use the campaign to promote the country’s tourism attractions and broader economic potential.

The vehicles will travel through some of Namibia’s renowned destinations, including the Zambezi and the Fish River Canyon, before the programme culminates in a main anniversary eregion vent in Windhoek.

The campaign is expected to provide an international platform to showcase Namibia’s diverse landscapes, cultural experiences, conservation efforts and hospitality to potential travellers around the world.

For the NTB, the initiative presents an opportunity to market Namibia as a destination offering diverse experiences, from the river landscapes of the Zambezi region to the country’s northern and central areas, Windhoek and the dramatic landscapes of the south.

NIPDB spokesperson Catherine Shipushu said Namibia’s participation was an important opportunity to strengthen the country’s profile internationally.

“Namibia’s inclusion in Mercedes-Benz’s 140 Years. 140 Locations campaign is a significant milestone,” Shipushu said.

She said the campaign would not only showcase Namibia’s natural beauty but also help position the country as an attractive investment destination.

“Beyond celebrating Namibia’s unique landscapes, this campaign presents an unparalleled opportunity to strengthen our nation’s brand and strategically position Namibia as a lucrative investment destination,” she said.

Shipushu added that efforts were being made to ensure the Mercedes-Benz team experienced the country’s hospitality during its stay.

“In the short-term, we are working hard to give the Mercedes-Benz team a true taste of Namibian hospitality and make sure they have an unforgettable experience in our country,” she said.

The campaign could also provide exposure for lesser-known tourism destinations and experiences as the vehicles move across different parts of the country.

The international reach of the initiative is expected to place Namibia before travellers, investors and business audiences, potentially creating opportunities for increased interest in the country’s tourism sector.

The campaign also coincides with significant milestones for M&Z Motors Namibia, which is celebrating 120 years of local history, while Mercedes-Benz marks 90 years in Namibia.

The partnership therefore links Mercedes-Benz’s global automotive heritage with Namibia’s tourism sector and the country’s long-standing relationship with the motor industry.

NTB, NIPDB and M&Z Motors Namibia will coordinate the route, tourism experiences, key locations, filming requirements and logistical arrangements with relevant stakeholders.

The partners intend to maximise the international exposure generated by the campaign and use it to tell a broader Namibian story centred on tourism, heritage, conservation, investment and economic development.

As the Mercedes-Benz vehicles cross Namibia, the country’s iconic landscapes and tourism destinations will form part of a global campaign spanning six continents.

The initiative is therefore expected to give Namibia an opportunity to showcase its tourism attractions to a much wider international audience while reinforcing the country’s position as a destination for travel, investment and business.
