South Sudan sets Dec. 22 date for first post-independence elections

JUBA, June 22 — South Sudan’s National Elections Commission (NEC) announced on Monday that the country’s first general elections since gaining independence in 2011 will be held on Dec. 22.

Originally scheduled for December 2024, the elections were postponed after political leaders agreed to extend the transitional period by two years under the 2018 revitalized peace agreement.
