Namibia has taken a leading role in Africa’s search for peace in Sudan after tabling a roadmap at the Pan-African Parliament (PAP) calling for an immediate ceasefire, a parliamentary fact-finding mission and stronger action against foreign interference fuelling the conflict.
The report, presented yesterday by Namibia’s Head of Delegation to PAP and Chairperson of the Permanent Committee on Cooperation, International Relations and Conflict Resolution, Phillipus Katamelo, was debated during the First Ordinary Session of the Seventh Pan-African Parliament.
It outlines practical measures that African governments and institutions should take to help end the conflict and address what has become one of the world’s worst humanitarian crises.
The report is the outcome of a high-level hearing convened by two PAP committees on 21 July, bringing together Sudanese officials, peace and security experts, the African Commission on Human and Peoples’ Rights (ACHPR) and the Open Society Foundations to examine the security crisis and its humanitarian consequences.
Among its key recommendations, the report calls on the Pan-African Parliament to convene a special session on Sudan, undertake a fact-finding mission to the country, support all peace initiatives, reject the parallel government established by the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), and condemn external actors accused of prolonging the conflict.
