There is a reason the Isuzu D-MAX has built such a loyal and almost cult-like following across Southern Africa and specifically in Namibia. Reliability, durability and low running costs have long been its calling cards. Now, with the arrival of the refreshed 2026 D-MAX range, Isuzu has set out to modernise its workhorse without compromising the qualities that made it successful in the first place.

After spending time behind the wheel last week during the D-MAX regional launch in Botswana, traversing the rugged terrain in and around the iconic Chobe National Park, it became clear that the latest updates are less about reinventing the D-MAX and more about bringing it firmly into the modern era.
The changes may appear subtle at first glance, but they are significant where it matters most. The most important upgrade is undoubtedly the revised 1.9-litre Ddi turbo-diesel engine. After several days on Botswana’s roads and gravel tracks, the verdict is that the 2026 Isuzu D-MAX has successfully evolved from a trusted workhorse into a far more sophisticated companion for both work and adventure. The upgraded 1.9 Ddi engine alone makes a strong case for the facelift, while the technological enhancements ensure the D-MAX is no longer playing catch-up with the competition.
